Hydrogen is the most abundant element in nature. Even though it is very light and small, hydrogen is very powerful as an energy carrier: it can be used to store excess renewable energy and then transported through an extensive network of pipelines and trucks to be applied to a plethora of applications, from mobility to heavy industries.
The Clean Hydrogen Value Chain
Linde has been harnessing the power of hydrogen for over 100 years and is the global leader in the production, processing, storage and distribution of hydrogen. Our company’s unique setup allows us to be present at every step of the hydrogen value chain. Our first studies on the use of hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel date from the mid 70s. Since then, we have made important investments and contributions to the field and today, we are at the forefront in the transition to clean hydrogen with the largest liquid hydrogen capacity and distribution system in the world. We also operate the world's first high-purity hydrogen storage cavern, coupled with an unrivaled pipeline network of approximately 1,000 kilometers to reliably supply our customers. We have installed over 200 hydrogen fueling stations and 80 hydrogen electrolysis plants worldwide and offer the latest electrolysis technology through our newly formed joint venture ITM Linde Electrolysis.

Fostering Clean Hydrogen
Linde is a steward of sustainability and an industry leader in clean hydrogen. We are founding members of the Hydrogen Council and the Hydrogen Mobility association and actively advocate for clean hydrogen policies and initiatives through more than 20 industry and government sponsored organizations around the world.
We lead by example and are taking steps towards decarbonizing our own operations. Our SD 2028 Targets include lowering our greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 35% by 2028, invest at least $1 billion in decarbonization initiatives and dedicate at least 1/3 of our R&D budget to decarbonization.
Empowering Renewable Energy
Linde is one of the founders of the largest P2G (Power to Gas) plant, in terms of capacity, in the world. It converts wind power into green hydrogen through electrolysis and has been running since 2015.
Decarbonizing Transportation - Passenger Trains
In collaboration with Alstom, Linde will build and operate the world’s first hydrogen refueling station for passenger trains, in Germany. The station, which is planned to start operations in 2021, will serve 14 Hydrogen-powered trains. Alstom is among the first railway manufacturers in the world to develop a passenger train based on such technology.
Decarbonizing Heavy Industry – Steel
In early 2020, Linde and OVAKO conducted the world’s first test to demonstrate that hydrogen fuel can help the steel industry reduce emissions by using hydrogen instead of fossil fuel to heat steel. Comprehensive analysis of the steel’s properties revealed that heating with hydrogen did not adversely affect the steel’s quality, while having the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
