Real World

Hear about Life @ Linde from our employees, in their own words.

Sonkamo Aula Sonkamo

What is your name? In which area and for how long have you been working for Linde/BOC?

My name is Marjo Aula-Sonkamo and I am from Finland. I joined the company in 1999 when it was still AGA before the merger with Linde. Since the beginning I have been working within Finance and Control both in Sweden and Finland, but always with regional tasks of various kinds. My current position is Head of Regional Control in the Europe North region. At the moment I am working in Espoo, Finland.

What are your main job responsibilities?

The coordination of business planning and management reporting internally within the Europe North region, which consists of eight countries, and operating as a results-orientated entity across national borders. The job involves the preparation of regional consolidations, different types of financial analyses of key figures, financial tools and methods development as well as investment and business case calculations supporting the needs of the regional management and fulfilling the requirements set by corporate headquarters.

What is the most exciting thing about your role?

Working in a multicultural business environment with daily contacts across national borders. At its best, Regional Control provides an opportunity to work relatively closely to the operative gas business, providing the necessary financial expertise. However, for someone with a financial background it also offers an opportunity to continuously learn more about the business itself.

Why did you decide to join Linde/BOC?

In 1999, AGA was already an international company providing opportunities to work in a multicultural business environment and a wide variety of opportunities within the area of financial business control. The international aspect has become even stronger after the merger with Linde and this trend will most likely continue with the BOC merger.

What do you like about Linde/BOC?

Although the gas business is often described as being a traditionally slow-moving business (especially when compared to the telecoms or IT businesses, for example), over the last few years we have demonstrated our strong drive to develop and become an even more international company in the marketplace. A lot of changes have taken place during my years at Linde and I expect this trend to continue and maybe even to accelerate. These changes give my day-to-day work the “extra spice” one needs to constantly develop oneself and keep one’s motivation strong.

Where do you see your career going?

I hope to continue working in the multicultural business environment with varying tasks in the field of Finance & Control.
