For more than 15 years, Linde has been supporting research facilities in their quest for new medicinal gas applications. In the past these efforts were concentrated mainly in Scandinavia, but with the founding of the GEMI Fund in the fall of 2003, we have expanded these activities to other countries as well. On a biennial basis we are donating one million US-Dollars from the GEMI Fund (GEMI = Gas-Enabled Medical Innovations) together with Harvard Medical International, a non-profit organisation at the Harvard Medical School, and the Swedish Karolinska Institute, one of Europe’s leading medical schools.
The grant is divided between five to ten research projects worldwide. The initial subsidies from the GEMI Fund have already been disbursed to 16 European and U.S. institutes that conduct research into new medical uses for nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen and other gases. Decisions as to the practical application of research results are left to the participating researchers and institutes.
